How to Cut Football Socks (and the Easier Way)

To cut football socks for the modern look, players cut the foot off their team socks just above the heel, wear grip socks underneath, and sometimes cut small vents into the back of the calf. It works, but it ruins a pair of socks every time and leaves messy edges. Pre-cut sock sleeves give you the same look without scissors.

Here's why players do it, how to cut your socks properly if you want to, and the easier way to get the same setup.

Why do footballers cut their socks?

Most players who cut their socks are wearing grip socks underneath. Grip socks have silicone on the sole that stops your foot sliding around inside your boot, but club socks go over the whole foot, so you can't wear both comfortably. Cutting the foot off your team sock turns it into a sleeve: the grip sock does the work inside the boot, and the cut team sock covers your shin and shin pads.

Some players go further and cut holes in the back of the calf. It's partly for airflow and partly because a tight sock can feel restrictive around the calf muscle.

How to cut football socks: step by step

You'll need your football socks, a sharp pair of scissors, grip socks and either sock tape or reusable sock straps.

  1. Lay the sock flat. Smooth it out on a table with the heel facing down, so both layers sit neatly on top of each other.
  2. Mark your cut line. Find the top of the heel and mark a straight line across the sock about 3 to 4cm above it. That's roughly where the top of your boot will sit.
  3. Cut straight across. Cut through both layers in one go, keeping the line as straight as you can.
  4. Do the second sock the same. Lay it next to the first one and line them up so both sleeves end at the same height.
  5. Calf vents (optional). Pinch the fabric at the back of the calf and snip small holes, starting small. You can always make them bigger, but you can't make them smaller.
  6. Put it together. Grip sock on, shin pad in, pull the cut sock up over the top, then hold the bottom in place with tape or a strap so it doesn't ride up.

The problems with cutting your own socks

  • You ruin a pair every time. Once they're cut, your socks are sleeves for good.
  • Messy edges. Knitted socks aren't made to be cut, so the edges can roll and run with every wash.
  • Wonky holes. Calf vents cut by hand rarely match, and they get bigger as the fabric stretches.
  • Tape everywhere. You need tape to hold it all together, which is sticky, itchy and binned after one match.

The easier way: pre-cut sock sleeves

Ventus Pro-Cut Sleeves are football sock sleeves that come pre-cut top and bottom, with clean edges from the first wear. You pull them on over your grip socks in seconds, and there are two styles:

  • Core: no openings, for the classic full sock look.
  • Aero: 3 vents at the back of the calf, the look players cut into their own socks, done cleanly.

Pair them with Pro-Grip Socks for grip inside the boot, and swap the tape for SockLock, a reusable silicone strap that holds your sleeve and sock together. The Foundation Bundle gets you grip socks and sleeves together for less.

FAQs

Is it allowed to cut your football socks?

Yes. The Laws of the Game say your socks must cover your shin guards, and any tape or material worn on the outside has to be the same colour as the part of the sock it covers. Some leagues have their own kit rules, so check that your sleeves match your team's sock colour.

Why do players wear grip socks under their football socks?

Grip socks stop your foot sliding inside your boot, which helps with sharp turns, quick stops and striking the ball. Team socks don't have grip on the sole, so players wear grip socks on their feet and a cut sock or sleeve on top.

How do I stop cut socks falling down?

Most players use sock tape around the ankle. A reusable strap like SockLock does the same job without the sticky mess.

Where should I cut my football socks?

About 3 to 4cm above the top of the heel, with the sock laid flat. That leaves the bottom of the sleeve sitting neatly over your grip sock, just above your boot.
